NIAMS offers the Supplements to Advance Research (STAR) program to provide additional support for early-career investigators to pursue innovative and high-risk research within the broader scope of a current NIAMS-funded, peer-reviewed research project. For the purpose of the STAR Program, NIAMS defines these investigators as those who have successfully renewed their first NIAMS-supported R01 award with Early Stage Investigator (ESI) status and must not have held more than two R01-equivalent grants. Applications for the STAR program must be submitted in the second or third year of the current award.

Although the FOA requires that the research proposed under the administrative supplement must be within the original scope of the parent grant, the NIAMS is defining within scope in the broadest possible sense for the purpose for the STAR program. The intention of the STAR program is to allow space for flexibility, innovation, and risk-taking in a direction that is related to the research area of the parent R01, rather than being simply an extension of the specific aims. This flexibility is optimized to allow the principal investigator to propose challenging, creative, and innovative endeavors that if successful, would broaden the scope of the research program by expanding a single, structured research project into a broader multi-faceted research program.

For additional information and application due dates, please see the FOA: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-AR-22-003.html.
